Thomas
Thomas has recently settled into one of Home in Place’s fully furnished studio apartments in South Auckland.
These homes are designed to provide a safe haven and affordable living for some of the community’s most vulnerable members, with free electricity, water and WIFI. A shared kitchen is available for all tenants, which provides a chance to connect with neighbours.
“The community is quiet, which suits me. I am a shy person and tend to keep to myself, but my neighbour Mata is really nice and we talk a lot. I feel more settled now that I am living here and I am thankful for how lovely everyone has been.”
After living with his mother for a time, Thomas knew he needed his own space. Finding a rental was not easy.
“I had tried to get a private home but found out I had bad credit. I was going through WINZ and had nowhere to go, so when Home in Place called me, it really helped. The process was quick and I am grateful for the opportunity to have my own home.”
With support from Home in Place staff, including Angela, the move was smooth.
“Angela has been very helpful right from the first phone call. She even made sure I had a food parcel when I moved in and a blanket. I am truly thankful.”
Now, Thomas is enjoying the independence of living on his own again.
“A good day for me is watching my movies, going for walks and still finding my way around Papatoetoe. Everything is close by, like the Cossie Club and public transport.
It is a great place. I am proud just to have my own place and my own space again.”
Looking ahead, Thomas is hopeful about what the future holds.
“I am looking for work first and foremost, and one day I would like to move into a home with its own kitchen. But for now, I am really grateful to have a place to call my own.”
