Social housing is affordable rental housing provided by government agencies and registered Community Housing Providers (CHPs) like Home in Place. It is designed for people who have a significant housing need and are unable to access or sustain suitable housing in the private rental market. Most social housing tenants pay income-tested rent which is generally around 25% of the net household income.
Social housing has many benefits, including access to secure, long-term rental accommodation; affordable rent based on income; and access to homes that may better suit individual and family needs.
Eligibility for social housing is assessed by Work and Income and several criteria must be met before someone can be placed on the Housing register:
More details on these criteria can be found on the Work and Income website, HERE.
People wanting to apply for social housing can contact Work and Income (WINZ) to discuss their housing situation. If they appear to be eligible, WINZ will complete a housing assessment. Those assessed as having a sufficient housing need are placed on the Housing Register and may be matched with a suitable property when one becomes available.
It's important to note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee an immediate offer of housing. Wait times vary depending on housing availability and local demand.
